DEFINE – What is a Migraine Headache?

A migraine headache is an intense headache characterized by pain and throbbing sensations felt in the head, as well as nausea, vomiting, and a sensitivity to light.

BREAKING DOWN – Mirgraines

Typically, migraines aren’t a quick affair. They tend to last anywhere from a few hours to a few days. Interestingly, women are three times more likely than men to experience a migraine. Further, migraines are often recurring, which means they can come on at any point if you suffer from them.

Experts and medical professionals don’t exactly know what causes a migraine. However, they do know that changes in the brain and genes may play a part. Migraines can be genetically passed down in the family. For others, migraines can be brought on by a number of factors such as diet, caffeine intake, and high levels of stress or anxiety.

All in all, a migraine happens due to overactive neural cells. These cells stimulate the trigeminal nerve, which is responsible for detecting sensations in your head and face. But also when this nerve is activated, serotonin and CGRP are released. CGRP (calcitonin gene-related peptide), in particular, lead the blood vessels that line the brain to swell. The result? Pain and inflammation, which we know as a ‘migraine.’

In addition, much like there are foods and drinks which trigger issues with the gut, there are those which upset or trigger migraines too. These include chocolate, alcohol, and some pickled foods. As such, it’s good to know your trigger foods if you tend to suffer from migraines.

If you think you suffer from migraines, it is worth going to your doctor to make sure. Other more serious conditions share similar symptoms, and can prove detrimental to one’s overall health. Your doctor can test and rule out other and more potentially dangerous conditions.

The symptoms typically associated with the migraine vary. Each person will feel it slightly differently, and with different levels of intensity. However, commonly with migraines, you can expect throbbing pain in the head and a strong desire to get away from light, as well as nausea.

As for treatment, it is recommended that you rest as much as possible in a dark room, with some kind of ice pack on your head to help with the pain. Further, alternative therapies, such as massage and acupuncture, have shown to help some individuals with their migraine symptoms.
