Events in Edmonton and Sherwood Park
The Silver Skate Festival is an annual 10-day celebration that takes place every February in the picturesque river valley of Edmonton. Drawing inspiration from Dutch winter traditions, this family-oriented festival seamlessly blends sports, particularly ice skating, with the arts, culture, and recreation. Remarkably, the Silver Skate Festival holds the distinction of being Edmonton’s longest-running winter event.
Over the years, it has evolved from a modest ice skating gathering into a grand winter extravaganza. Each year, Hawrelak Park undergoes a magical transformation, turning into a captivating winter wonderland filled with activities for the entire family. Amidst the snowy landscape, visitors can marvel at exquisite snow sculptures, partake in various winter sports, and enjoy leisurely rides in horse-drawn sleighs that traverse the park. For a truly immersive experience, guests can also visit a Cree Winter Camp and savor the tradition of cooking bannock over an open fire.
Sports enthusiasts can get their adrenaline pumping by competing in thrilling events like the Winter triathlon or speed skating competitions. Meanwhile, those seeking cultural enrichment can delight in live musical performances and captivating theatrical shows alongside their friends and loved ones. The Silver Skate Festival prides itself on offering an array of activities as diverse as the vibrant Northern community it serves, making it a cherished winter tradition in Edmonton.
