What is your sport: Floorball

Not to be confused with the internationally recognized and hugely popular sport of football, floorball is actually a form of hockey. The objective of the game is to strike the plastic ball with holes into the opposition team’s net. Both teams are made up of six players, one of them being the goalkeeper. 

Just like regular hockey, in floorball, the game is played over the course of sixty minutes. The hour is divided up into three periods of twenty minutes each. However, one way in which it differs from ice hockey is in how the goalkeeper plays. The goalkeeper in floorball has to play on his or her knees, using just their body to keep the ball out of the net.

Common Muscle Injuries from Floorball:

In floorball, you are expected to make a lot of quick movements and sprints. As a result, a lot of muscle injuries revolve around the big muscles in the legs. Pulled muscles are a big risk due to fast changes of direction and sprints, particularly in the thighs and groin. Sprains are another common injury. You may land awkwardly and sprain your wrist. Or you may step incorrectly resulting in a sprained ankle.


How Can You Alleviate Your Floorball Injuries?

If you have pulled your groin or thighs, place an ice pack on the area that hurts most. Keep doing this throughout the day to ease the pain and reduce inflammation. Aim to apply the ice for 10-20 minutes and leave about 45 minutes in between applications.

Sprains are typically less serious, and you can usually recover quite quickly from them. That being said, make sure you speed up the healing process by using ice packs and keeping the affected body part elevated. Avoid returning to your sport too soon. And make sure you allow adequate time for your sprain to fully heal.
