Muscle Pain Above the Knee

muscle pain above the knee

Symptom – Are you experiencing muscle pain above the knee?

The knee is the biggest and most complex joint in the human body. And with multiple meniscus, ligaments, muscle attachment points, and bones, it’s relatively easy to injure.

Muscle pain above the knee isn’t uncommon either. It may increase when you extend your knee. It may also be accompanied by swelling or tenderness. Let’s take a closer look!

What is causing the muscle pain above your knee?

Quadriceps tendonitis is the most frequent culprit causing muscle pain above the knee. Quadriceps tendonitis is the inflammation of the quadriceps muscle or tendon. It is often due to overuse or structural issues with the knee. Athletes, individuals with excess weight, and arthritis patients may also have a higher risk of aggravating the quadriceps muscle or tendon.

The muscle pain above the knee may also be caused by a quadriceps or tendon strain. A strain pulls the muscle or tendon past it’s normal limits. It results in tearing or stretching of the muscle, causing pain. If the tear or stretching has happened at the lower part of the quadriceps, you may feel pain above the knee.

If the muscle pain above the knee is located also toward the outside of the knee, it may have to do with your iliotibial (IT) band. This tissue may also become inflamed from repetitive use or overuse. Again, it results in pain and possibly swelling or tenderness near the knee joint.

How can you relieve the muscle pain above your knee?

The best thing for quadriceps tendonitis is rest. The body needs time to heal. Your doctor or physical therapist may also recommend anti-inflammatory medication to help during the initial stages of recovery. You may further ice above your knee to help ease the pain. Apply ice for 10-15 minutes at a time with a cloth or towel in between the ice and your skin. Typically, quadriceps tendonitis heals in about 4-6 weeks. The same is true for an aggravated or inflamed IT band.

You may also benefit from massage throughout your recovery. Massage promotes healing through increased blood flow and circulation. It further helps relieve muscle tightness and pain.
