Sternal Muscle

Sternal Muscle

DEFINITION – What does Sternal mean?

Running alongside the sternum, parallel with the sternal end of the Pectoralis Major, the Sternalis muscle can take on many different shapes and connections, and in fact, is only present in less than half the population. There is much debate surrounding this muscles’ origin and innervation.

FUNCTION – Sternal Muscle

In concordance with the disagreement on its form, there is also substantial debate on this muscle’s purpose and on its source of innervation, with people claiming a variation of one or more of the internal or external thoracic nerves, the pectoral nerves, and/or the intercostal nerves.
