Active Release Technique

Active Release Technique, or ART, is a hands-on treatment that targets soft tissue injuries, aiming to relieve pain and improve function.

Active Release Technique (ART) refers to a type of massage therapy that focuses on soft tissues to relieve problems affecting muscles, nerves, ligaments, and tendons. ART can also be effective for the management of pain in the head, shoulders, back, and neck.

What is Active Release Technique?

The application of ART involves both assessment and treatment at the same time. ART is a very specialized technique and therapists who employ it are among the top in the industry. There are hundreds of different combinations targeting specific areas of the body, and as therapists work, they are constantly palpating muscles, ligaments, and tendons to find spots needing treatment. It’s a back and forth technique which works to relax tightened muscles, breaking-up scar tissue and adhesions by working muscles and tissues through their full natural range of motion while applying constant tension to the limb. The technique helps shortened muscle fibres elongate much more efficiently than they could with only stretching.

In general, the technique targets muscle over-exertion, hypoxia (a lack of oxygen), tears and pulls from injuries, and also micro-traumas which are the accumulated result of many tiny tears in the muscle fibre. It is also extremely useful for a stiff neck and back, tightness in extremities, hamstring pulls, tennis elbow, and shin splints.

ART is a hands-on soft tissue treatment that aims to relieve pain and improve function by breaking up scar tissue and adhesions in muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

ART is unique in that it combines manual therapy with movement, allowing the practitioner to assess and treat the patient in real-time. This approach can help identify the root cause of the patient’s pain and provide more targeted treatment.

ART can be effective for treating a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to, carpal tunnel syndrome, plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff injuries, tennis elbow, and IT band syndrome.

ART can be uncomfortable during the treatment, but it should not be excessively painful. Patients may experience some soreness or bruising afterward, but this should subside within a day or two.
