Sciatic Nerve Pain

Symptom – Are you experiencing sciatic nerve pain?

Sciatic nerve pain is pain caused by the sciatic nerve – the longest nerve in the human body. It may feel like a numbness, tingling, burning, or weak sensation in the low back, buttocks, or down one or both legs. It may worsen when you sit, stand, cough, or sneeze.

What is causing your sciatic nerve pain?

Sciatic nerve pain is caused by injury to the nerve or compression on the nerve from other tissue, such as a tight muscle. Conditions including a herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, and even pregnancy can aggravate the nerve. In between each vertebra bone are shock-absorbing discs. Injury or age may cause these discs to protrude past their outer ring. In turn, it may place pressure on the sciatic nerve. Degenerative disc disease works in a similar way when it affects the lower spine. During pregnancy, low back pain is a fairly common issue. Due to the developing fetus, pressure is placed on other structures close by, which can create problems such as sciatic nerve pain.

Abnormal spine conditions may also lead to sciatic nerve pain. Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the space around the spinal cord. This narrowing can place pressure on nerves, including the sciatic nerve. Further, tight and aggravated muscles, such as the small piriformis muscle in the buttocks, may compress the nerve causing pain.

What can you do to relieve your sciatic nerve pain?

Sciatic nerve pain is an entirely treatable condition. Treatment often consists of determining the cause of the pain. If it is a tight muscle pressing on the nerve, such as the piriformis, treatment will consist of finding ways to relax and release the tension in that muscle.

Massage therapy can also help relax aggravated muscles, promote blood flow to the affected area, and encourage your body’s healing mechanisms.
