How can a Myofascial Cupping Massage help you?

Myofascial Cupping addresses the deeper myofascial tissues and helps to kick-starts blood-flow to the muscle tissue, which greatly enhances natural healing. The practice involves the therapist placing or moving pressurized cups on your skin. The cups can be made of silicon, plastic, or glass. The practitioner will apply the cup to your body incorporating pressure with either suction, pumping, or heating methods depending on the style of cup.

The procedure can leave a painless, circular mark which disappears in a few days, whereupon you can return for another treatment. Ultimately, cupping can reduce pain, eliminate adhesions, promote lymph drainage, decrease scar tissue, and release tension.

History of Myofascial Cupping:

Records exist of practitioners using Myofascial Cupping Massage as far back as 3000 BC. The Egyptians used it, and so did the people of Ancient Greece. In Ancient Greece, Hippocrates used cupping techniques to help decrease internal disease and structural issues. Since then, it has been mentioned in various historical texts and is now widely used by athletes and non-athletes alike.

Nowadays, there is a trend of professional athletes who are using the practice as part of their regular physical conditioning. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, 3 different medal winners attributed their wins in part to Myofascial Cupping Massage. Gymnast Alex Naddour, and swimmers Natalie Coughlin and Michael Phelps were all receiving the therapy during the games. Afterwards, Naddour stated that cupping keeps him healthy, and that “it’s been better than any money I’ve spent on anything else.”

What to expect:

If you have more complex issues of tension or muscle aches and pains that were possibly caused by an injury or repetitive strain, a Myofascial Cupping Massage is the right service for you.

You can book a Myofascial Cupping Massage for 45 minutes to 2 hours in length however the cupping itself may only be utilized for portions of that time. Your treatment will begin with a short but in-depth assessment. This is your opportunity to point out what area(s) you’d like to work on during your time, as well as identify any special requests or concerns you may have.

Your therapist will start with a standard Therapeutic Massage. Cupping is often applied to the shoulders, neck, back, sacrum, hips, abdomen, thighs, calves, or upper arms – depending on your compliant or injury. Your therapist will determine the areas to apply the cups based on what was inferred from your verbal assessment and what is ascertained by palpating your soft tissue. They will apply the cups to areas of adhesion, leaving them static for a short amount of time. They may also manipulate the cups over the areas to assist with the breaking down the adhesion. Your therapist is trained to identify the source of your issue and treat as needed.

Your therapist may use silicone cups, pump cups or glass cups. This is a matter of preference for each RMT but all are beneficial for the same reasons.

Other things you should know:
