BREAKING DOWN – Inflammation

Inflammation is the body’s immune response, protecting us from foreign substances such as bacteria or viruses. In autoimmune diseases, inflammation is caused by the body attacking its own cells and is often chronic. However, normally inflammation is acute.

Essentially, it is the dilation of arteries as immune cells and nutrients rush to the affected area. White blood cells ingest the foreign invaders. When the die, they create pus which creates swelling. This swelling can compress nerve endings, causing pain.

Inflammation is a natural response of the body to injury, infection, or irritation. It is a protective process in which the body’s immune system works to remove harmful stimuli and begin the healing process.

The symptoms of inflammation include redness, swelling, pain, warmth, and sometimes loss of function in the affected area. Inflammation can also cause fever, fatigue, and other systemic symptoms.

There are two types of inflammation: acute and chronic. Acute inflammation is the body’s immediate response to injury or infection, while chronic inflammation occurs when the immune system is unable to clear the initial cause of inflammation.

Treatment for inflammation depends on the cause and severity of the condition. Mild inflammation can often be treated with rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) therapy, over-the-counter pain medications, or anti-inflammatory drugs. In more severe cases, prescription medications or other therapies may be necessary.
