What to Expect During Your Craniosacral Therapy Appointment

If you’re looking to address Headaches, Migraines, stress-related tension, nervous system dysregulation, or a sense of overall imbalance in the body, Craniosacral Therapy may be the right choice for you.

Your appointment will begin with a comprehensive assessment. This includes a discussion of your chief concerns, headache or migraine patterns, relevant health history, stress levels, sleep quality, and any lifestyle factors that may be contributing to your symptoms. Your practitioner will then perform a gentle structural and craniosacral assessment to evaluate subtle restrictions within the craniosacral system and surrounding tissues. Together, you’ll establish clear treatment goals to ensure the session is calm, focused, and aligned with your needs.

Based on the assessment findings, your practitioner will utilize gentle, non-invasive craniosacral therapy techniques, including light touch and subtle manual adjustments designed to support the natural movement of cerebrospinal fluid, release restrictions in the connective tissue system, and promote deep relaxation. This approach is often used to help reduce the frequency and intensity of headaches and migraines, as well as support overall nervous system regulation. Treatment is extremely gentle, and your comfort is prioritized throughout the entire session.

To support lasting results, you will receive personalized home care recommendations, such as stress management strategies, hydration, gentle movement, breathing exercises, and lifestyle considerations that may help reduce symptom triggers. Before leaving, be sure to speak with your practitioner about the ideal timing for your next visit. This collaborative approach supports relaxation, pain reduction, and improved overall well-being.

Other things to know about your Craniosacral Therapy appointment:

To help you get the most from your Craniosacral Therapy session, here are some important tips to keep in mind:

  1. Arrive Early: Plan to arrive a few minutes before your appointment. This allows time to complete any paperwork and settle in before treatment begins.
  2. Eat a Light Meal: Avoid heavy meals before your session, as they may make it harder to relax. Try to eat a light meal one to two hours beforehand. Avoid coming on an empty stomach, as it may cause lightheadedness.
  3. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water before and after your session. Staying hydrated helps flush out toxins released during treatment and minimizes soreness.
  4. Dress Comfortably: Depending on your treatment and area of concern, you may or may not be asked to undress to your comfort level. In some cases, you may remain fully clothed but will be required to move freely, so we recommend wearing loose-fitting or athletic clothing that allows for easy movement.
  5. Communicate Clearly: Before your session, share the reason for your treatment, including any injuries, repetitive strain, areas of tension, medical conditions, and your goals. Keep an open dialogue throughout, raising questions or concerns so your practitioner can make adjustments in real time.
  6. Rest Afterwards: Avoid intense activity and give your body time to rest and recover post-treatment.
  7. Follow Aftercare Guidance: Your practitioner may provide specific exercises, stretches, or self-care advice to support your recovery. Following these instructions ensures the best results.
  8. Seek Medical Clearance: If you have a serious health condition, are pregnant, undergoing active cancer treatment, or have recently experienced an injury or motor vehicle accident (MVA), please consult your healthcare provider before starting treatment. This helps ensure your safety and may be required for insurance purposes. In some cases, treatment may need to be adjusted or postponed until it is safe to proceed.

History of Craniosacral Therapy:

In the late 1800s, Dr. Andrew Taylor Still discovered that many illnesses could be treated through careful manipulation of the musculoskeletal system – without the need for dangerous surgery or drugs. This was a major step forward in medical science and lead to the development of Manual Osteopathy. More than a century later – in the mid-1970s – Dr. John Upledger took it one step further and developed Craniosacral Therapy (CST).

Dr. John Upledger derived his ideas from William G. Sutherland. Sutherland began teaching a course at the American School of Osteopathy in the 1940s regarding Osteopathy in the Sacral Field. The course’s popularity and teaching grew. Upledger, a doctor of Osteopathy, later developed the protocol and steps used in CST today.

Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, non-invasive form of bodywork that uses subtle movements and pressure to balance the craniosacral system. This system includes the membranes and fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.

Craniosacral therapy works by applying light touch and gentle pressure to various points on the body, particularly the head, neck, and sacrum. This helps to release restrictions in the craniosacral system, promoting the body’s natural healing processes and restoring balance.

Craniosacral therapy can be effective for a wide range of conditions, including headaches, migraines, neck and back pain, stress and tension-related disorders, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and many others. It is also commonly used to improve overall health and wellness, and to promote relaxation and stress relief.

Craniosacral therapy is generally considered safe for most people. It is a gentle, non-invasive technique that is unlikely to cause any harm. However, as with any form of bodywork, there may be certain individuals who are not good candidates for this type of therapy, so it is always important to discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider before trying it.
