Achy Shins

Achy Shins

Symptom – Are you experiencing Achy Shins?

What is causing your achy shins?

The most common cause of achy shins is shin splints. Shin splints is the inflammation of the muscles, bones, and tendons at the shin, causing pain. They are often caused by doing too much, too soon. For example, runners frequently experience them when they increase their training distance or intensity too quickly. New runners are also more at risk. Other causes of shin splints include improper footwear, flat feet, and running on hard surfaces. Shin splints may also be accompanied by swelling and tenderness at the shin bone.

A less common causes of achy shins include a fracture occurring at the tibia bones. Although, it is often impossible to bear weight and noticeable at the time of the break.

How can I alleviate my achy shins?

If you suspect it is shin splints, decrease your activity and rest. Go for low impact activities, such as biking, walking, or swimming. Once the pain has disappeared, you can return to your regular activities.

When your shins begin to ache, the R.I.C.E. method can also prove effective. R.I.C.E. stands for rest, ice, compress, and elevate. Ice for no longer than 15 minutes at a time. And make sure to place a cloth or paper towel in between the ice and your skin.

Massage and acupuncture may also prove to be effective and relieving your aches and pains. Massage can help decrease tension around the affected area and reduce pain. Click the ‘BOOK NOW’ button below to schedule your next appointment.
