Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave Therapy

DEFINITION – What does Shockwave Therapy mean?

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment method for injuries. It uses low energy acoustic wave pulses directly applied to a patient’s skin via the use of gel.

BREAKING DOWN – Shockwave Therapy

In recent years, shockwave therapy has become more frequently used. Originally, it was used for breaking up gallbladder and kidney stones. However, it was later found to help in many chronic pain conditions.

Today, it is included in treatments for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions – including heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, calcification conditions, tendonitis, shin splints, and more. Shockwave therapy has proven to be particularly useful in chronic tendonitis conditions. The low energy acoustic waves have proven to lead to faster healing. It also contributes to the regeneration of tissue – again promoting a proper recovery.

Further, research has shown it has few side effects and a positive impact on acute pain conditions. However, shockwave therapy should not be used if a person has a nerve or circulation disorder, infection, or certain bone disorders and conditions. Treatment typically takes about 4-5 minutes. During treatment, you may experience mild discomfort. Following your shockwave treatment, you may have increased soreness and swelling in the area. This is completely normal. The shockwaves cause the body to produce an inflammatory response – helping your body heal.

Shockwave therapy makes for an ideal non-surgical intervention in many cases. It can help speed up recovery and treat an array of conditions.
