DEFINITION – What is Chondromalacia Patella?
Chondromalacia Patella refers to the gradual breaking down of cartilage in the patella, which is located under the kneecap. This affliction usually comes about as a result of friction caused between the femur and the knee. Symptoms of chondromalacia patella include aching pain and stiffness upon flexing the knee joint.
BREAKING DOWN – Chondromalacia Patella
Chondromalacia patella is more likely to affect people who are overweight, have suffered previous injury to the knee, or who engage in regular physical exercise like running. However, it can happen to anyone and can result even from the way the knee is positioned at times.
You will also put yourself more at risk of developing affliction if you spend large portions of the day in a sedentary position, with your knees bent.
For this reason, it is recommended that to avoid chondromalacia patella later down the line, action is taken to prevent excessive amounts of stress on the knees – either through sitting or vigorous exercise. It is also wise to pay attention to and stay true to proper technique when engaging in running.
If chondromalacia patella isn’t dealt with properly, – usually plenty of rest for the knees will suffice – then it can lead to long-term issues, and potentially even chronic knee pain.
If the condition of the knee does deteriorate over time, a course of anti-inflammatory medications is usually recommended.
It isn’t just exercise that causes the affliction though, injuries to the knee, such as a torn meniscus, can also provoke chondromalacia patella. Torn meniscus symptoms are likely to include pain in the knee and patella.
