DEFINE – What is Compressive Neuropathy?

Compressive neuropathy, also called nerve compression syndrome, is a condition caused by the compression of a nerve.

BREAKING DOWN – Compressive Neuropathy

There are many different types of compressive neuropathy. For instance, sciatica is a type of compressive neuropathy. In sciatica, other structures press on the sciatica nerve (a nerve that runs from the low back through both legs). This may involve the piriformis muscle. When this muscle becomes tight or spasms, it’s close proximity to the sciatic nerve can cause irritation. Abnormalities in the low back structure can also cause the sciatic nerve to become compressed. Ultimately, this results in pain, tingling, numbness, and muscle weakness through the buttocks and down the legs.

Another example of compressive neuropathy is carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome is when the carpal tunnel, and thus the median nerve that runs through it, becomes compressed. This is often due to swelling caused by repetitive movements or the wrist being held in the same position for a prolonged duration.

Generally, in any case, tingling, numbness, burning, and weakness are signs of compressive neuropathy. As per the examples above, it’s frequently caused by repetitive movements, holding the limbs or body in the same position for a prolonged period, muscle strains or tension, injury, tumors, excess weight, and sometimes, edema. Often, a person must undergo nerve conduction tests to confirm a nerve is actually being compressed. In rare cases, surgery is required to relieve the symptoms.

Treatment entails treating the root cause of the problem. For example, if a tight muscle is compressing the nerve, treatment aims to relax that muscle. If swelling or fluid build-up is placing pressure on a nerve, treatment will then address this.

And massage can help in many of these cases. Massage can help relax tight muscles and improve circulation. It can help promote healing and recovery from an injury. Want to learn more? Book your next appointment with Athlete’s Choice Massage. Start by clicking BOOK NOW below.

Compressive neuropathy, also known as nerve entrapment or pinched nerve, is a condition where a nerve is compressed or squeezed by surrounding tissue, such as bone, cartilage, muscle, or ligaments. This can cause pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the affected area.

Common causes of compressive neuropathy include repetitive motion or overuse of a particular body part, trauma or injury to the affected area, arthritis, tumors, or anatomical abnormalities such as bone spurs or herniated discs.

A healthcare provider will typically diagnose compressive neuropathy based on a physical exam and a review of the person’s medical history. Imaging tests such as X-rays, MRI, or CT scans may also be used to confirm the diagnosis and determine the location and severity of the nerve compression.

Treatment for compressive neuropathy may include rest, physical therapy, pain medication, and/or muscle relaxants. In some cases, steroid injections or surgery may be necessary to relieve pressure on the affected nerve and alleviate symptoms. A healthcare provider can recommend the best treatment plan based on the severity of the condition and the individual’s overall health.
