A concussion is caused by a sudden force that literally shakes the brain inside the skull. A fall or motor vehicle accident is frequently the cause. The brain sustains damage, such as bruising or swelling. In turn, the brain can’t function properly. Symptoms include, but are not limited to, blurred vision, confusion, vomiting, dizziness, and increased sensitivity to noise and light.
Concussions range from mild to severe. In mild concussions, symptoms last only about 15 minutes and the person does not lose consciousness. In severe cases, the person loses consciousness, and may deal with symptoms for the rest of their life.
