Heel Pain

Symptom – Are you experiencing Heel Pain?

Heel pain refers to pain felt on the bottom of the foot, such as in the arch. It is often worse when walking and starts gradually. It is further frequently decreased via rest.

What is causing your Heel Pain?

The most common cause of heel pain is plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the plantar fascia, a connective tissue that runs from the heel to the toes. This piece of connective tissue supports the arch of the foot. Pain may arise from walking too much and from structural issues, such as a high arch or a flat foot. Wearing the wrong footwear may also contribute to heel pain.

Heel bursitis is another condition that may contribute to heel pain. At the back of the heel, there is a bursa, a fluid-filled sac, that supports and protects the bones, ligaments, and tendons of the foot and ankle. This bursa may become aggravated and inflamed from overuse or from landing hard on your heels. The pain usually increases as the day goes on.

Heel bumps may further cause heel pain. This is a more common condition in adolescents. The heel bone has not fully matured. As such, it may rub and cause pain in the heel. This condition is often exacerbated by heels or flat feet.

Tarsal tunnel syndrome may cause heel pain due to an entrapped or compressed nerve in the foot. Other less common conditions causing heel pain further include chronic heel pad inflammation, a stress fracture, sever’s disease, Achilles tendinosis, and arthritis.

How can you alleviate your Heel Pain?

The relief for your heel pain may depend on what is causing it. Consult with your doctor. They will be able to properly diagnose the issue and set you on the correct treatment path.

Massage therapy may further help relieve heel pain by releasing tight muscles, increasing blood flow, and improving range of motion. Book your next appointment with Athlete’s Choice Massage today. Click the BOOK NOW button below.
