Manipulation often aims to restore joint mobility and relieve pain. A manual therapist may move the limb through a certain range to try to improve or maintain the range of motion of the joint. It sometimes involves a high-velocity thrust. This thrust briefly moves the joint past it’s normal range of motion.
There are different types of manipulation. For example, spinal manipulation treats symptoms and conditions affecting the spine. Other types treat smaller joints, such as that in the ankle and foot.
