Muscle Pain in Your Jaw Area

muscle pain in jaw area

Symptom – Are you experiencing muscle pain in the jaw area?

Muscle pain in and around the jaw is defined as discomfort in the lower face or jawline.

What is causing my muscle pain in the jaw area?

Jaw pain is common and it can become extremely painful. Surprisingly, it affects millions of people across the globe. It can make it difficult to eat, sleep, or talk. So, what’s going on? What is causing your muscle pain in the jaw?

Temporomandibular joint and muscle disorder, or TMJD, is a common cause of muscle pain in the jaw area. This disorder affects your jaw joints – which are hinge joints on the side of your face. Grinding your teeth, clenching, or trauma directly to the jaw can cause this disorder to arise.

Toothaches and sinus problems can also manifest as muscle pain in the jaw. The pain radiates – causing you to think that it is coming from your jawline. Headaches or neural problems can also create pain in this area.

What can you do to relieve your muscle pain in the jaw?

Ice or heat can help to relieve the pain temporarily. Apply the ice or heat for 15 minutes at a time and make sure to keep a cloth between the ice or heat pack and your skin. Your doctor may also recommend taking over-the-counter pain relievers to help reduce the pain. In severe cases, surgery may be required to fix dental or jaw structural problems.

In any case and if the pain persists, make an appointment with your doctor or dentist. They may further recommend massage therapy to help relieve your muscle pain. Massage can help reduce your pain, increase blood flow to the area, decrease muscle tension, and help encourage a proper recovery.
