History of Myofascial Cupping

Records exist of practitioners using Myofascial Cupping Massage as far back as 3000 BC. The Egyptians used it, and so did the people of Ancient Greece. In Ancient Greece, Hippocrates used cupping techniques to help decrease internal disease and structural issues. Since then, it has been mentioned in various historical texts and is now widely used by athletes and non-athletes alike.

Nowadays, there is a trend of professional athletes who are using the practice as part of their regular physical conditioning. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, 3 different medal winners attributed their wins in part to Myofascial Cupping Massage. Gymnast Alex Naddour, and swimmers Natalie Coughlin and Michael Phelps were all receiving the therapy during the games. Afterwards, Naddour stated that cupping keeps him healthy, and that “it’s been better than any money I’ve spent on anything else.”

How Can Myofascial Cupping Help You?

Myofascial Cupping kick-starts blood-flow to the muscle tissue, which greatly enhances natural healing. The practice involves the therapist placing slightly heated cups on your skin to stimulate blood flow and promote healing. The cups are typically made of glass, although other materials can be used. The practitioner will quickly pass a flame into the cup; just long enough to heat the air within, and then place the cup, open face down, on your body. As the air within the cup cools, it creates a vacuum which pulls your flesh up and inside. The procedure leaves a painless, circular mark which disappears in a few days, whereupon you can return for another treatment. Ultimately, cupping can reduce pain, eliminate adhesions, promote lymph drainage, decrease scar tissue, and release tension.

What I Need to Know Before My Myofascial Cupping Appointment?

Cupping is often applied to the shoulders, neck, back, sacrum, hips, abdomen, thighs, calves, or upper arms – depending on your compliant or injury. Your therapist will determine the areas to apply the cupping to through a proper assessment and other massage techniques. Usually, a myofascial cupping massage session lasts 45 minutes to 2 hours in length. You book your appointment ahead of time so you’ll know what duration to expect going into it. As aforementioned, expect the treatment to leave circular marks that may last up to 10 days.
