Ashiatsu is a form of Thai Massage however it is better compared to deep tissue massage. The main difference is that the therapist uses their feet to deliver treatment rather than their hands and arms. The advantage of using bare feet on the body is to deliver firm pressure and broad contact. Often referred to as “back walking”, Ashiatsu Massage is a traditional healing system following the teachings of yogi masters. This type of massage works to mobilize your body and address areas of tension or reduced range of motion. Many aspects of Thai massage are utilized such as; stretching, acupressure, twisting, and joint manipulations.
What to Expect During Your Ashiatsu Massage Appointment
If you’re looking to address deep muscle tension, chronic stiffness, restricted mobility, postural strain, or a preference for very deep pressure work, Ashiatsu Massage may be the right choice for you.
Your appointment will begin with a comprehensive assessment. This includes a discussion of your chief complaint, relevant health history, previous massage experience, and any contributing lifestyle or movement factors. Your practitioner will then assess areas of tightness, postural imbalance, and muscular restriction to better understand how your body is holding tension. Together, you’ll establish clear treatment goals to ensure the session is focused, effective, and aligned with your comfort level and desired pressure.
Based on the assessment findings, your practitioner will utilize Ashiatsu Massage techniques, a deep pressure modality where the therapist uses their feet to apply slow, broad, and sustained pressure while walking along the back and body. An overhead Ashiatsu frame is used for stability, balance, and precise regulation of pressure. This allows for consistent, deep work that can be especially effective for large muscle groups and chronic tension patterns. Pressure is carefully controlled and adjusted throughout the session, and communication is essential to ensure the intensity remains both therapeutic and comfortable.
To support lasting results, you will receive personalized home care recommendations such as stretching, hydration, mobility work, and recovery strategies to help maintain improved tissue quality and reduce tension between sessions. Before leaving, be sure to speak with your practitioner about the ideal timing for your next visit. This approach supports deep structural release, improved mobility, and long-term reduction of muscular tension.
What to know
Before Your Visit
Arrive Early
A few minutes before your appointment lets you complete paperwork and settle in before treatment begins.
Eat Light
Avoid heavy meals for 1–2 hours beforehand. A light snack is fine — an empty stomach can cause lightheadedness.
Stay Hydrated
Drink water before and after. Hydration helps flush out waste released during treatment and reduces post-session soreness.
Dress Comfortably
Wear loose-fitting or athletic clothing that allows free movement. Your therapist will advise on draping based on your treatment.
Communicate
Share your concerns, injuries, and goals before the session starts — and keep the dialogue open throughout so adjustments can be made in real time.
Rest After
Skip intense activity after your session and give your body time to integrate the treatment.
Follow Aftercare
Your therapist may prescribe specific stretches, exercises, or self-care strategies. Following through ensures the best long-term results.
Medical Clearance
If you are pregnant, undergoing cancer treatment, or recently injured, consult your healthcare provider before booking. Your safety comes first.
