Upper Back Pain

What is causing your upper back pain?

Upper back pain is prevalent in the general population often due to poor posture.

Many of us sit at a desk all day, hunched forward in front of our computer. We strain our neck, upper back, and shoulder muscles leaning forward. It places unnecessary stress on the body.

Pain may range from a localized spot to a more severe, sharp, burning pain. Some may experience achiness around the shoulder blades or mid-back area. It may also spread and cause stiffness and pain in the neck.

What are other causes of upper back pain?

In addition to bad posture, upper back pain is caused by overuse, an accident or fall, or improper lifting techniques. The muscles may become strained, develop a reduced range of motion in the upper body, or the joints may develop a dysfunction of some kind.

Less common causes may include degenerative disc disease, a herniated disc, a compression fracture, fibromyalgia, arthritis, or a specific spinal disorder or disease.
