History of TMJ Release

TMJ, temporomandibular joint, disorders were described as early as the Ancient Egyptians. However, medicine and treatment have come a long way. In the past, procedures were much more invasive and focused on dental issues and function. Today, the focus is on chronic pain management – where the treatment, such as TMJ Release Massage, is non-invasive and involves a multidisciplinary approach.

How Can TMJ Release Massage Help You?

Around 12% of individuals suffer from TMJ disorders. The disorder affects the jaw. It may appear as a slight irritation, or for some, the simple act of eating or talking is excruciating and painful. Luckily, there’s a safe solution that can cut the pain, reset the jaw, and lead to healing.

The TMJ is a hinge joint connecting the lower jaw and the temporal bones located on each side of your head, directly in front of the ears. When healthy, the TMJ is flexible, allowing the jaw to move freely up and down, and side to side. In turn, this allows for easy chewing, speaking and yawning. When a person has TMJ disorder, the joint is stiff and any movement can be extremely painful. The disorder can also cause pain in the neck and shoulders. Often, patients experience toothaches, earaches, dizziness, and even problems hearing.

In TMJ Release Massage, therapists use a technique called Myofascial Release (MFR). MFR  is a form of massage that involves the application of sustained compression over trigger points in your face. The procedure eliminates pain, restores jaw motion, and decreases stress and tension.

What I Need to Know Before My First TMJ Release Massage Appointment?

Appointments are 45 minutes or 60 minutes. Frequently, your first TMJ Release Massage appointment will last 60 minutes. Your therapist will perform a thorough assessment, measuring range of motion and strength. They will also ask you questions regarding your condition, pain levels, medical history, and lifestyle. During the treatment, the therapist will work on the outside and inside of your TMJ. They will wear gloves to massage and release the inner workings on the jaw.
