What is TMJ?
TMJ is an acronym for temporomandibular joint, which is a hinge-like connection between your lower jaw and the temporal bones located on each side of your head, directly in front of the ears. Often, people use the acronym to refer to the disorder affecting the joint. When healthy, the TMJ is flexible, allowing the jaw to move freely up and down, and side to side, allowing for easy chewing, speaking and yawning. When a person has TMJ disorder, the join is stiff and any movement can be extremely painful. The disorder can also cause pain in the neck and shoulders. Often, patients experience toothaches, earaches, dizziness, and even problems hearing.
What causes TMJ disorder?
There are many possible causes of TMJ. Stress is high up on the list, as is poor posture, as in when people lean over a computer or cell phone. Other causes include infections, injuries, dental work, female sex hormones, and even chewing gum. Grinding or clenching your teeth, as many people do when sleeping, places alot of pressure on the joint, and can also cause TMJ. More often than not, the disorder impacts women between the ages of 20 and 40.
How do I make it go away?
Our therapists will use a technique called Myofascial Release (MFR) which is a form of massage that involves the application of sustained compression over trigger points in your face. The procedure will eliminate your pain, restore jaw motion, and cut stress and tension.
