What is Bursitis?

Bursitis is a painful condition that affects the small fluid-filled sacs called bursae, which cushion the joints.

DEFINITION – What does Bursitis mean?

Bursitis refers to the inflammation of a bursa, a fluid-filled sac that is frequently found at certain joints such as the hips and the knees.

BREAKING DOWN – Bursitis

A bursa provides cushion at the joint for bones, muscles, and tendons. Bursitis is often caused by overuse or repetitive actions. The structures around the bursa may become irritated. In turn, the bursa becomes inflamed. The shoulder, elbow, and hips joints are the most common spots for bursitis to occur. The spot may feel sore, achy, and stiff. The affected area may become swollen and more aggravated upon movement. Often times, the best way to solve the problem is rest. It gives your joint a much-needed break and can allow time for the inflammation to calm down.

Bursitis is a condition that occurs when the bursae, small sacs of fluid that cushion the bones, tendons, and muscles in your joints become inflamed.

The symptoms of bursitis may include pain, swelling, stiffness, and tenderness in the affected area. In some cases, the area may also be warm to the touch or red.

Bursitis can be caused by overuse, injury, or underlying conditions such as arthritis, gout, or an infection. Certain occupations or activities that involve repetitive motions or pressure on the joints can also increase the risk of developing bursitis.

Treatment for bursitis may include rest, ice, compression, and elevation of the affected area, as well as over-the-counter pain medication. In some cases, physical therapy or corticosteroid injections may be recommended. Surgery is rarely needed.
