What is Fat?

DEFINITION – What does Fat mean?

Fat is a natural substance that is deposited underneath the skin. It is frequently referred to as ‘adipose tissue.’ It helps regulate temperature and protects vital internal organs. Fat is also a macronutrient, which is a necessary component in the human diet.

Fat gets a bad rap. Yet, we need fat in our diets and our bodies to survive. Fat provides energy to the body, which allows us to go about our everyday activities. It is further a necessary substance for Vitamin A, D, E, and K absorption in the body. Without fat, our bodies may not be able to absorb these vital nutrients. Fat also provides insulation, helping your body maintain a normal and regular core temperature.

Like anything, fat can become a problem when it is consumed in excess. Further, there are good fats and bad fats. Dietitians recommend consuming more monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats to lower your risk of cardiovascular disease, and lowering your intake of saturated fats, since these are linked to higher cholesterol levels.
