What are the most common types of headaches?
There are numerous types and causes of headaches, all with varying levels of pain, from a dull, intermittent ache, to a sharp, unrelenting throbbing. Headache pain can originate from one small area, or it can feel like your whole head is in a vice. The most common type of headache is called a ‘tension’ headache, caused by tightness in your shoulder, jaw, and neck muscles, the result of stress, lack of sleep, and/or poor diet.
From a medical perspective, headaches are classified into three general categories.
- Primary headaches:
This class of headaches includes the most common forms – tension and migraine, both of which, though not life-threatening, can be debilitating, seriously degrading the quality of life. At the same time, primary headaches can be short-lived, and manageable through medications and physical therapies such as massage.
- Secondary:
These headaches are potentially more dangerous as they are generally the symptom of an underlying problem, such as an infection, poor bone structure, a brain tumor, substance abuse, physical trauma such as a concussion, or a life-threatening disease such as HIV.
- Facial and cranial nerve pain:
This category covers headaches caused by cranial nerve inflammation and irritation. The most common, Trigeminal Neuralgia, is the inflammation of a facial nerve that causes intense bouts of pain, enough to make you cringe and cry out. These headaches can happen once every few years, or once every few seconds.
