A trigger point is a point found within the tissue of the muscle which is associated with pain elsewhere in the body. Such trigger points exist often as a result of low blood flow in the area or muscle overuse.
Trigger point therapy is based around the idea that by manipulating these trigger points in the body, the massage therapist can alleviate some of the client’s pain and discomfort.
However, the process is more complex than simply pressing into trigger points. Unlike most forms of massage, trigger point therapy requires a small amount of participation from the client to yield the best results. The client will typically be asked to engage in mindful, deep breathing to facilitate the massage process and to get in touch with the body to successfully locate the trigger point that is causing them problems.
Further, there are a number of common problem areas or trigger points in the body. Many are located in the upper back and neck. However, they can also be found throughout the body.
Trigger points often manifest as knots in the body. Most of us have experience with such knots, and know that they are at times, incredibly tender. This can be painful to apply pressure to. However, the idea behind trigger point therapy is that we can ‘release’ these knots with controlled pressure and release.
