What is your sport: Tennis
Tennis is a sport involving 2 or 4 players. The players use tennis rackets to hit a tennis ball over a net stretched across the centre of the court. The goal is to score the most points by hitting the ball within the outlined area without the opposing player or players being able to return the ball.
There are a variety of skills involved in tennis. In order to effectively play the game, a player must be able to perform forehand and backhand strokes and be able to serve the ball. It further requires various footwork, volleying, and mental strategy.
Common Muscle Injuries from Tennis
The most common tennis injuries include:
- Rotator Cuff Injuries: The shoulder is a common spot for injuries in tennis players.
- Tennis Elbow: Tennis elbow is an overuse injury. It happens from repetitive movements – such as swinging the racket in tennis.
- Jumper’s Knee: Jumping is frequent in tennis in order to hit the ball. Repetitive jumping can cause the tendons that attach the shinbone to the kneecap to become inflamed.
- Ankle Sprains: Due to the fast pace of the game and focus on the ball, ankle sprains are common in tennis.
How Can You Alleviate Your Tennis Injuries?
If you injure yourself during a game or practice, take a break and rest the injured area. R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation) is an effective strategy to use following an injury. Make sure to use a cloth in between your skin and any ice application to avoid skin damage. Only ice the area for 10-15 minutes at a time. If the pain persists after 1-2 days, book an appointment with your healthcare provider. For proper treatment, it’s important to get a proper diagnosis and assessment of the affected area.
